Traditional vs Online
Lecture Materials

Traditional Materials

Live classroom lectures center on the instructor delivering important course content. The lecture can be derived from the course textbook, research, and instructor experience.

Online Materials

Asynchronous and synchronous lecture materials may be derived from the same materials used in traditional classrooms. However, additional video, audio, and website links may be built into the lecture, adding a new dimension to the lecture which adds additional visual interest and different points of view.

Technology

Traditional Materials

Traditional classrooms use standard teaching technologies such as chalkboards, whiteboards, flipcharts, and overhead projectors. Some classrooms include computers, digital whiteboards, and specialized lab equipment.

Online Materials

Online courses are technology–based from the start. The computer, the Internet, and networks are all technologies that are part of the typical online course. Personal audio and video recording technologies can easily be used to generate user-created content for course projects.

Assignments

Traditional Materials

In-class activities and homework assignments might consist of pre-designed worksheets, workbook exercises, lab report assignments, team-oriented projects, and activities that the student works on during class. In many cases, in-class activities are not graded.

Some courses taught in a traditional setting may make use of Internet-based tools for work done outside of the classroom.

Reading assignments from a textbook, handout, or as the result of student research are typically assigned during each class.

Students submit assignments to the instructor in person.

Online Materials

Practice exercises and handouts tend to be built into online lectures in order to replace traditional in-class practice activities. .

Discussion forums provide an opportunity for students to expand on the built-in exercises found in the online lecture. They are usually graded.

Lesson assignments and projects are displayed in the LMS. Some are completed individually and others in a collaborative format, either through the LMS features or other social networking resources.

Assignments rely on the student completing questions, preparing papers, performing research, and using media technologies as approved by the instructor.

Reading assignments may be limited to the online lecture, provided in a handout, or from a digital copy of the textbook included in the LMS.

Students submit graded assignments via the LMS.

Instructor Materials

Traditional Materials

Many textbook publishers offer an instructor version of their texts. Instructors can draw on this resource in the development and delivery of lecture and assignments. Instructor textbooks often contain answer keys and teaching tips.

Some publishers also offer resource CDs containing presentations, test banks, proposed discussion questions, and sample lectures/lesson plans.

Online Materials

The materials offered by textbook publishers may be made available to the instructor creating an online course. In addition, an instructor resource guide may be available to assist the instructor in the delivery of an online course. Instructor resource guides often contain references to online teaching resources, and provide technology tips.
